The newly opened Wind Creek Chicago Southland casino has exceeded expectations, drawing more than 50,000 visitors in its first week of operation. The casino, which opened its doors on November 11, 2024 has quickly become a major attraction in the Southland area.
A Successful Opening
Hundreds of eager patrons lined up hours before the 11:00 AM. opening on the first day. “People were lining up at 7 a.m.,” said East Hazel Crest Mayor Tom Brown. “Since then, it has gone smoothly.”
The casino’s executive vice president and general manager, Roger Kuehn, noted, “Guests have had great things to say about the property’s design, the food, and the service. Overall, they’re really enjoying their experience.”
Community Impact
The casino, located at 17300 S. Halsted St., spans 75,000 square feet and includes a food court and plans for an entertainment venue. Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld expressed his satisfaction with the opening, stating,
“After the first day, things went very well. They know what they’re doing.” The casino’s parking lot and adjacent parking garage quickly filled to capacity on the first day, with staff directing people to turn around at one point.
Economic Benefits
Wind Creek Chicago Southland is a subsidiary of PCI Gaming Authority Inc., which manages several casinos on behalf of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
The casino is projected to generate gross gaming revenues approaching $160 million a year by 2025. As part of its license application, Wind Creek has committed to establishing the Southland Public Benefit Fund, initially distributing $150,000 annually during the first five years to provide scholarships and bolster access to healthcare, reported Chicago Tribune.
After five years, the fund is expected to grow to $20 million, increasing yearly disbursements to $1 million.
Positive Reception
Both mayors walked through the casino on opening day and heard positive comments from visitors. “People are trying it out and it’s been well received,” Hofeld said. “It’s a great attraction for the Southland.” The casino also has a revenue-sharing agreement with more than 40 other south suburbs, ensuring that the economic benefits are widely distributed.
