PAK vs SA Series 2024: South Africa Makes 9 Changes to its ODI Squad

"South Africa's ODI Squad Overhaul: Key Players Return for Pakistan Series"

South Africa has announced a revamped ODI squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan, making nine changes from their previous lineup. This considerable reshuffle sees the return of several key players, aiming to strengthen the team ahead of the crucial matches.

Key Players Return

The squad welcomes back stalwarts such as Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi.

These players last featured in an ODI almost a year ago and are expected to bring experience and stability to the team. “We have named our strongest squad available, with each player capable of being a match-winner on their day,” said Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach.

New Faces in the Squad

Among the new additions is 18-year-old speedster Kwena Maphaka, who has been impressive in recent performances. Maphaka, who was the leading wicket-taker at this year’s Under-19 World Cup, is the only uncapped player in the squad. “This series offers a great opportunity for a young talent like Kwena to come in and learn first-hand from the best,” Walter added.

Injuries and Absences

Unfortunately, the squad will be without key pacer Anrich Nortje, who has been ruled out due to a toe injury. Other notable absences include Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee, Wiaan Mulder, and Nandre Burger, all sidelined with various injuries.

Looking Ahead

The ODI series against Pakistan, starting on December 17, will be South Africa’s last bilateral engagement before the Champions Trophy 2025. The team is keen to fine-tune their combinations and build momentum ahead of the prestigious tournament. “We are very pleased with this squad. This series will be crucial in fine-tuning our combinations ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy next year,” Walter emphasized.
