The tech giant is considering adding new countries to its platform, which currently reaches about 125 million people every month in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. This move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its services business, which includes Apple TV+ and Apple Pay, collectively worth around $96 billion annually.

According to sources familiar with the plans, Apple is also looking to build its locally focused news coverage in the UK and introduce its puzzles section, which is currently only available in the US and Canada. This expansion is expected to boost Apple’s role as a growing source of revenue for many publishers. “From a brand awareness point of view, it’s really important,” said David Higgerson, chief digital publisher at Reach, the UK’s largest regional newspaper owner.

Apple News has become a substantial revenue stream for many publishers, especially as digital revenues from other sources have declined. The platform offers a mixture of curated and personalized stories from magazines and newspapers, games, podcasts, and newsletters. Sean Cornwell, chief executive of Immediate Media, noted that Apple News has “sort of come out of nowhere, and very quickly has become quite a material revenue line”.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its success, Apple News has faced criticism from some publishers who find it challenging to monetize their articles due to Apple’s strict data protection rules. These rules prevent advertisers from targeting readers using third-party data or IP addresses.
