Pi Network’s Open Network Launch Sparks 80% Surge in Pi Coin Price

Pi Network Set to Enter Open Network Phase on February 20, 2025

Pi Network is officially transitioning to the Open Network phase of Mainnet on February 20, 2025, at 8:00 AM UTC. This marks a significant step forward for the six-year-old project, which has now surpassed major development goals.

With over 10.14 million Mainnet migrations and more than 19 million identity-verified users, Pi is preparing to launch an ecosystem-driven network where Pioneers can use Pi beyond the enclosed environment.

Pi Network’s Journey to Open Network

The transition to the Open Network happened in different phases. These phases focused on identity verification, ecosystem development, and blockchain stability. The Mainnet phase started in December 2021 with the launch of the Enclosed Network. This phase allowed users to use Pi in a secure space without external blockchain access. It also gave users time to complete KYC verification. Developers used this period to build applications for the Pi ecosystem.

A major change came in March 2022. A new mining rewards formula was introduced. This formula followed a declining exponential model. It aimed to balance network growth, accessibility, and sustainability. The model ensured Pi remained scarce while still rewarding contributors.

In July 2024, Pi Network launched the Grace Period. This phase helped speed up the transition to the Open Network. It pushed users to complete KYC verification. It also ensured that unverified Pi could not move to Mainnet. More Pi became available for verified users. The Grace Period increased participation in events like PiFest 2024. Over 950,000 Pioneers engaged in transactions. Around 27,000 sellers and 28,000 test merchants participated across 160 countries.

What Changes with the Open Network?

The biggest difference between the Enclosed Network and the Open Network is external connectivity. Once the firewall is removed, Pi will connect with external blockchain networks. This change will increase Pi’s potential uses. Pioneers will get more flexibility to trade and transact. Businesses that support Pi will offer more opportunities.

Another important change is the transition of nodes from Testnet to Mainnet. Anyone can add nodes to the network. However, the Core Team will prioritize Pioneers with strong reliability scores. Every user must complete KYC verification. Businesses must complete KYB verification to participate. These steps will ensure compliance and security.

Developers are still improving their applications. Over 100 Mainnet-ready apps are already available. Verified businesses will appear on the Pi website. This will help Pioneers find and engage with trusted merchants.

The Impact of the Open Network Announcement

After the Open Network launch date was announced, Pi Coin’s price went up by 80% to $92 in hours. This shows strong excitement around Pi. However, experts warn that Pi’s long-term value will depend on its adoption, compliance with regulations, and market conditions.

Pi’s market performance has been speculative so far. Still, its ability to support real-world transactions and connect with external blockchains could create more demand. PiFest has already shown that Pi can help make payments for goods and services. This is a positive sign for its future.

How Pioneers and Developers Can Engage in Open Network?

Pioneers are essential to Pi’s growth. Mining will continue, but the rate will change according to the declining model. Users should support local businesses, use Pi apps, and complete KYC if they haven’t yet.

Developers should focus on improving Mainnet apps and creating new ones that help the ecosystem grow. Businesses that want to accept Pi must apply for KYB verification and follow network rules.

As Pi Network moves into this new phase, it aims to grow real-world use and get more businesses, developers, and the crypto community involved. The Open Network phase is expected to be a key moment, helping Pi reach its full potential as a popular cryptocurrency.
