The Philippines is taking important steps to enhance its tourism infrastructure to cater to the growing global halal travel market. Despite being predominantly Catholic, the country boasts a rich Islamic heritage spanning over 600 years, as reflected in its cultural landmarks and history.

Philippines Targets Muslim Travelers with Halal-Friendly Initiatives

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has introduced several initiatives to make the Philippines more Muslim-friendly. These include the Muslim-friendly accommodation establishments program, ensuring hotels and resorts meet specific standards, such as providing prayer rooms and halal-certified food.

Currently, 17 accommodations have been officially recognized as Muslim-friendly, with 13 operated by the Megaworld Group.

Muslim-Friendly Accommodations and Services

In Boracay, the country’s top resort island, Marhaba Boracay was opened last year as a dedicated cove area for Muslim women travelers. The DOT is also developing tailored halal tourism packages in collaboration with local tour operators.

Showcasing the Philippines’ Islamic Heritage

The Philippines’ Islamic heritage is showcased in iconic sites like the Sheikh Karimul Makdum Mosque in Tawi-Tawi, the oldest mosque in the country, built in 1380. Other historical sites related to the Sulu Sultanate, which played a key role in spreading Islam, are also being promoted.

Increasing Air Connectivity with Gulf Countries

To further boost tourism, the DOT is working to increase air connectivity with Gulf countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Negotiations with airlines are underway, with air service agreements expected to be finalized in the coming months.

A Top Destination for Muslim Travelers

These efforts aim to position the Philippines as a top destination for Muslim travelers, combining its natural beauty with cultural and religious inclusivity.

“We are committed to making the Philippines a welcoming and inclusive destination for Muslim travelers,” said a DOT spokesperson. “Our rich Islamic heritage and modern infrastructure ensure a comfortable and memorable stay for all visitors.”

By focusing on halal-friendly tourism, the Philippines is expanding its tourism market and fostering a culture of understanding and respect among its visitors.

The country’s dedication to inclusivity is evident in its efforts to cater to the unique needs of Muslim travelers.
