Kathleen Kennedy will retire by the end of 2025. She shared her retirement plans with close associates. Lucasfilm and Kennedy have not officially commented yet.
Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair with George Lucas. Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion, and Kennedy became the boss. She brought “Star Wars” back with The Force Awakens in 2015. The movie made over $2 billion globally.
Disney released a new Star Wars movie every year from 2015 to 2019. But The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 received mixed reviews. It made only half of what The Force Awakens earned.
Tough Decisions and Missed Opportunities
According to The Hollywood Reporter: Kennedy faced tough decisions during her time at Lucasfilm. She fired Chris Lord and Phil Miller while making Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie became the first “Star Wars” film to lose money.
She replaced Gareth Edwards with Tony Gilroy during Rogue One reshoots. The film still became a $1 billion hit.
Some “Star Wars” projects never happened. Rian Johnson’s trilogy and the project by Game of Thrones creators never moved forward. Daisy Ridley’s return to “Star Wars” has been stuck in development for years.
Despite movie struggles, “Star Wars” thrived on Disney+. The Mandalorian launched in 2019 and became a hit. Spinoffs like Andor won praise, while others failed to connect with fans.
The next “Star Wars” movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, releases on May 22, 2026. Kennedy’s career includes classics like E.T., Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future. Fans await more news at the “Star Wars” Celebration in Tokyo this April.
