DuckDuckGo Introduces a Tool to Hide AI-Generated Images from Search Results

Find Real Photos Online: DuckDuckGo’s New AI Filter Explained

DuckDuckGo, the popular privacy-focused search engine, has launched a new feature that allows users to hide AI-generated images from their search results.

This change comes at a time when realistic-looking AI visuals are becoming more common and harder to spot, causing confusion for people who want to find genuine photos online.

The feature is now available under DuckDuckGo’s Images tab, where users can click on the “AI Images” filter and select “Hide”. DuckDuckGo will then remember this choice for future searches.

For those who prefer to set this up in advance, you can also visit noai.duckduckgo.com, which automatically blocks AI images from the start. The setting can be changed anytime from the site’s search preferences.

According to DuckDuckGo, this filter uses an extensive blocklist built from open-source projects such as uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist.

It targets over 1,000 websites that are known for hosting AI-generated images whether they’re marked as AI or not.

This helps users see more authentic results, especially when looking for references for school, work, or creative projects.

While DuckDuckGo admits that their filter may not catch every AI image, early testing shows a noticeable improvement.

For example, a search for “tabby kittens” showed fewer oddly shaped, cartoon-like pictures and more natural photos of real animals.

This update is a welcome step for teachers, designers, researchers, and everyday users who rely on trustworthy image content. It also reflects DuckDuckGo’s goal to keep its use of AI “private, useful, and optional.”
