Udupi, Karnataka — August 2025: Temples in Karnataka are stepping into the digital age with the help of artificial intelligence. A pilot project launched in Udupi district is now using AI to manage crowd control, donation tracking, and ritual scheduling—ushering in a new era of “smart temples” that blend tradition with technology.
From Rituals to Real-Time Dashboards
The initiative, backed by the state’s Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department, aims to streamline temple operations without compromising spiritual sanctity. Using AI-powered analytics, temple administrators can now:
- Predict peak crowd hours and adjust darshan timings
- Track donations with real-time transparency dashboards
- Automate ritual calendars based on lunar cycles and devotee preferences
This system is currently being tested in select temples across Udupi, with plans to expand to major pilgrimage hubs like Dharmasthala and Kukke Subramanya.
Tradition Meets Innovation
According to a research paper by SDM College, Ujire, AI tools such as facial recognition, natural language processing, and computer vision are being adapted for temple logistics. These technologies help manage footfall during festivals, ensure security, and even assist in digital archiving of ancient scriptures.
Priests involved in the pilot say the system reduces administrative burden, allowing them to focus more on spiritual duties. “We’re not replacing tradition—we’re enhancing it,” said one temple trustee.
Pan-India Momentum
Similar efforts are underway in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where temples like Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams have adopted facial recognition and automated queue systems. Karnataka’s model, however, emphasizes local customization, integrating Kannada-language interfaces and region-specific rituals.
Devotees can now book darshan slots, make donations, and receive personalized ritual reminders via mobile apps. Plans are in motion to introduce AI-powered chatbots that answer spiritual queries and guide visitors through temple history.
