New Delhi – Swedish home‑furnishing giant IKEA is looking to increase the amount of furniture it sources from India for both its global operations and its expanding local retail business, but says government policy support is key to making it happen.
Susanne Waidzunas, Inter IKEA Group’s Global Supply Manager, said furniture remains the company’s “core” product for customers worldwide, and India is a priority sourcing market.
“For this, we require sustainably sourced wood, which is critical to grow exports from India,” Waidzunas told PTI.
According to her, access to raw materials that meet international standards would allow Indian suppliers to compete more effectively in IKEA’s global supply chain. She stressed that policy measures to ensure sustainable forestry and quality compliance will be essential for scaling up exports.

IKEA already sources a wide range of products from India, but the company wants to further strengthen its supplier network here as part of its global expansion drive. Industry analysts say such moves could boost India’s manufacturing base and create new jobs, provided the right infrastructure and environmental safeguards are in place.
The company has set a long‑term goal of raising local sourcing in India to meet both domestic retail demand and the needs of its global distribution hubs.
