Instagram Testing Picture-in-Picture Mode for Reels: Watch Videos While Multitasking

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that could redefine how users consume short-form video content. The Meta-owned platform is currently testing Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels, allowing select users to watch videos in a floating window while navigating other apps.

What Is Picture-in-Picture Mode?

Similar to YouTube and TikTok’s existing PiP functionality, Instagram’s version lets users continue watching Reels even after minimizing the app. Once enabled, the video plays in a small overlay window, giving users the freedom to reply to messages, browse other platforms, or order food—all without interrupting their viewing experience.

Who Gets It First?

The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu on Threads, and Meta has confirmed the test to multiple outlets including TechCrunch and Indian Express. Users selected for the trial receive a pop-up prompt:

“Try picture in picture. Turn this on to continue watching reels in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram.”

Currently, the feature is available to a limited group of users, and there’s no official timeline for a global rollout5.

Why It Matters

Instagram’s move comes amid growing competition in the short-form video space. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube have long supported PiP, and Instagram’s delay in adopting the feature has been a point of user feedback. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri previously hinted at the update, saying he’d “talk to the team and see if we can figure something out”.

For creators, PiP could be a game-changer. Longer Reels often suffer from drop-off rates, but with PiP, viewers can stay engaged while multitasking. This could lead to higher retention, more watch time, and better reach for content creators.

How to Use or Disable It

If PiP is active on your account:

  • Tap the “Try Picture in Picture” prompt
  • Reels will continue playing in a floating window
  • To disable, tap the three-dot menu on any Reel and toggle off “Picture in Picture”

As Instagram continues to evolve its video strategy, PiP mode may become a standard feature—especially as multitasking becomes the norm for mobile users. Whether it’s replying to texts or scrolling through X, users may soon find themselves watching Reels without ever pausing.
