Kathmandu, Nepal Sept. 8, 2025: — Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Kathmandu on Monday to protest the government’s decision to ban popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
The protest was led mostly by young people, including students and activists, who say the ban is unfair and limits their freedom of expression. Many held signs, chanted slogans, and marched toward the Parliament building demanding that the ban be lifted.

Police tried to control the crowd using tear gas and water cannons. Some clashes were reported near government offices, and a curfew was later announced in parts of the city to prevent further violence.
The government says the ban is meant to stop the spread of fake news and harmful content. But critics argue that it’s a way to silence voices and avoid public criticism.
“This is not just about apps. It’s about our right to speak and connect,” said one protester.
