Beijing, November 13, 2025 – Mainland Chinese police have announced cash rewards for information about two Taiwanese online personalities accused of spreading separatist views.
The authorities described them as “terrible influencers” whose activities pose a serious threat. According to officials, Taiwan’s independence movement continues to be a major concern, and these individuals are now under close watch.
Police Statement and Accusations
The Quanzhou police department in Fujian province revealed that the influencers, Wen Ziyu and Chen Boyuan, were first identified earlier this year by the Taiwan Affairs Office.
Investigators claim the two have repeatedly published separatist remarks and criticized mainland policies. Officials allege that they acted as online supporters of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party and foreign anti-China groups.
In its official notice, the police said: “We urge compatriots to recognize the extreme danger and harm of Taiwan independence and actively provide any tips.”
The mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Chen Binhua praised the decision, remarking instantly after the information that the action was “justified and necessary”.
“These ‘Taiwan independence’ accomplices have done all kinds of evil and are hated by people on both sides of the strait. We must severely punish these individuals according to law and hold them accountable for life,” he said.
Cash Rewards and Public Appeal
Chinese authorities have increasingly used reward schemes to encourage public cooperation. In similar cases earlier this year, police offered up to 10,000 yuan (about $1,390) for verified tips. This latest announcement continues that trend, highlighting Beijing’s determination to curb separatist voices online.
International Reactions
The move has sparked debate among observers. Critics argue that targeting influencers reflects growing pressure on Taiwan’s civil society, while supporters in mainland China see it as necessary to safeguard national unity.
According to South China Morning Post, Wen and Chen were accused of bullying mainland spouses in Taiwan and acting as internet trolls for political groups.
Broader Context
This development comes amid heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing has repeatedly warned against separatist activities and has tightened its monitoring of online spaces.
Analysts note that offering cash rewards is part of a broader strategy to discourage dissent and strengthen control over narratives related to Taiwan.
