Abu Dhabi: The upcoming IPL 2026 player auction, scheduled for December 16, has already sparked headlines with the expected presence of Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, even though he is currently sidelined with a spleen injury. According to BCCI sources, the franchise has included Iyer’s name among its official representatives for the auction, signaling his continued leadership role despite being out of action since last month’s ODI series in Australia.
Iyer guided Punjab Kings to the final last season and is set to lead the team delegation in Abu Dhabi, barring any last-minute changes. His presence is seen as a morale boost for the franchise, which has ₹11.5 crore left in its purse and can acquire up to four players, including two overseas signings.
In contrast, head coach Ricky Ponting will not be attending the auction. Ponting is currently contracted with Australia’s Seven Network for Ashes commentary duties, with the third Test in Adelaide beginning on December 17. Sources suggest that commentary commitments and limited auction activity for the Punjab Kings are behind his absence.
Meanwhile, assistant coach Daniel Vettori has sought permission from Cricket Australia to attend the auction despite his Ashes commitments, following a similar arrangement last year. Other franchises are also expected to have high-profile names at their tables, including Justin Langer and Tom Moody for Lucknow Super Giants.
Adding to the buzz, the Mumbai Indians have been ranked the most valuable IPL franchise at USD 108 million, followed closely by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (USD 105 million) and Chennai Super Kings (USD 93 million).
With Iyer’s expected presence and Ponting’s absence, the Punjab Kings’ auction strategy will be closely watched as franchises prepare for another competitive season.
