A growing pile of domestic and construction waste at the entrance of Hubballi city on Kusugal Road has become a major civic concern, with residents accusing the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) of failing to curb illegal dumping. According to a recent report, the stretch along the Hubballi–Solapur National Highway has effectively turned into an open dumping yard, spoiling the appearance of one of the city’s key gateways.
A Gateway Turned Garbage Zone
Locals say the problem has worsened over the past several weeks as households and construction crews continue to dump hard materials, clothes, wet waste, and building debris along the roadside. The area, which connects Hubballi to major Maharashtra cities including Solapur, is a crucial route for interstate travel and regional transport. Despite this, the road’s beautification has been severely damaged by unchecked waste accumulation.
Residents from nearby colonies such as Sundar Colony, Sanskar Colony, and Siddaganga Colony report that dumping typically happens during early mornings and after sunset, making it difficult to identify offenders.
Residents Voice Frustration
Motorists and locals have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the situation. One commuter, Siddhartha Pujar, said waste is being dumped “on a regular basis” and urged HDMC to impose fines on violators. Another resident, Manjunath Belur, highlighted that even mud and construction debris are being thrown on major roads, adding that “city outskirts should be clean and green”.
HDMC Responds
Officials from HDMC’s solid waste management department acknowledged the issue. Executive engineer Santosh Yarangalli stated that the corporation had cleared the waste earlier, but dumping has resumed. He assured that the waste would be removed again and that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
A Growing Urban Challenge
The situation reflects a broader challenge faced by rapidly expanding urban areas, where enforcement gaps and public negligence often lead to environmental and civic deterioration. With the area continuing to develop and traffic increasing, residents hope for quicker and more consistent intervention from authorities.
