The newly rebuilt Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, the state-of-the-art Terminal 2 (T2 ) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh this month. The new terminal is world class and there are many features that would make it laudable.
The GVK-led consortium-built T2 has been constricted at a cost of over Rs 12,500 crores, and is spread across an area of over 1400 acres.
The terminal has granite laid over a space equal to 27 football fields. Further, more than 18000 metric tonnes of steel have been used in its construction.
Expected to cater to an estimated 40 million passengers on an annual basis, this four-storey terminal boasts 188 check-in counters, 60 immigration counters for departing passengers, and 76 immigration counters for incoming passengers. The T2 also has been spruced up with 47 escalators and 73 elevators.
The T2 is also connected to the domestic Sahar airport nearby by a six-lane elevated expressway. For passenger convenience, the terminal also has a multi-level car park that can accommodate up to 5,000 vehicles.
If you are a flier who would want to go around shopping, you needn’t move away as the T2 itself houses 21,000 square meters of area for retail shopping.
Passenger safety also has been taken care of with the installation of 2300 CCTV cameras and 4100 public address speakers.
A white peacock themed art walk, titled ‘Jaya He’, extending up to 3 km has on display art work and paintings of repute.
