The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) believes that the government’s policy to require the reports of undocumented migrants to the authorities when they attend Covid-19 vaccination will be a setback to the nationwide vaccination efforts.

The MMA president Dr. Koh Kar Chai said undocumented workers would be discouraged from the vaccination if their vaccination is reported to the law enforcement authorities.

Dr Koh noted that Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, during his tenure, had made the guidelines to encourage undocumented migrants to come ahead for their vaccination doses. Everyone will remain safe when each person is fully vaccinated.

“People who did not previously register themselves with MySejahtera, a mobile application developed by the government of Malaysia, were supposed to undergo a process of documentation that entitled them to register. However, the health service providers informing security forces about the presence of undocumented migrants at health and vaccination centers will send a wrong message to those concerned who are still left to be vaccinated,” Dr Koh said in his recent interview.

In his recent parliamentary reply, Hamzah said that this was among the vaccination standard operating procedures decided by the cabinet for the vaccination program of undocumented migrants on July 30 as a part of the vaccination SOP for the group.

“According to the circular from the director-general of Health, the government agreed the undocumented migrants should be documented and recorded. This circular demands the duty of health service providers to enlighten the security authorities about the presence of undocumented migrants in the health premises,” he said.

Hamzah further added that strategic cooperation between several government agencies and private centers is essential to encourage undocumented migrants to register voluntarily for the vaccination.
