At a CNN town hall event, when a participant asked Biden if he would defend Taiwan from China’s attacks, he responded with a “Yes.” Further, he added that there is no need to worry about the powers of Russia and China, as the world knows that America has the strongest military. He was then queried a second time by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper if the US would come to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack by China, to which Biden replied that yes, they commit to doing that.
A White House spokesperson later appeared, telling US media outlets that the US was “not announcing any change in our policy and there is no change in our policy.”

Response of China and Taiwan
In his response to Biden, Xavier Chang, official presidential spokesperson of Taiwan, said that Taiwan is an independent country and will defend its democracy and freedom. He further said that Taiwan has a firm determination to protect itself and noted the actions of America’s administration for their rock-solid support. Taiwan’s defense minister Chiu Kuo-cheng noted that the military tension between the two countries is at its worst for forty years, and China will be capable of mounting until 2025.
Though China has not responded yet, before Biden’s town-hall visit, the UN ambassador of China, Zhang Jun, accused the US of “taking dangerous steps, which can lead the situation in the Taiwan Strait into a dangerous direction.
The tension between China and Taiwan
The tension is rising between China and Taiwan. Xi Jinping, the President of China, would like to unite Taiwan in the lands of China under his leadership, but it will require taking the land force, which is a horrendous and challenging task to attempt. After seizing Taiwan, there would also be a significant challenge of retaining control over a territory where the majority part of the 24 million population opposes the Communist Party rule. After capturing Taiwan, regional instability will further draw America, Japan, or Australia.

Though the stakes of capturing Taiwan are high, China can conquer this difficulty within a few years due to its growing military powers.
