The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021, also known as COP26, is the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference. It is being held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, between October 31, 2021, and November 12, 2021, under the leadership of Alok Sharma. Italy and United Kingdom are organizing this event.

This is the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and it is the third meeting of the parties in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The 26th conference to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) started on Sunday, October 31, 2021, in Scotland’s Glasgow and will conclude on November 12, 2021.

This event was attended by about twenty-five thousand representatives from over 200 countries and around 120 heads of state. Among these most high-profile and influential attendees are US President Joe Biden, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett attended. Although initially Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison indicated his absence but later confirmed that he would be present. The president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is also attending the conference.

PM Modi’s speech at COP26

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his five major tinctures for fighting climate change in India during his speech at the COP26 summit.

These resolutions are:
1) The increase in the non-fossil fuel energy capacity to 500GW by the year 2030.
2) Fulfilling the 50 percent requirements of India’s energy from renewable sources by 2030.
3)The reduction in India’s total projected carbon emissions by an amount of 1 billion tonnes by the year 2030.
4)Reducing the carbon intensity for the Indian economy by 45 percent by the year 2030.
5) Reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.

Affects due to pandemic

Earlier this year, the countries UK and Italy hosted the summits of the G7 and G20, respectively. In the global pandemic, both the host countries were severely affected by the virus. The current conference venue, the SEC center in Glasgow, Scotland, was converted into a temporary hospital in May 2020. The councils in and around Glasgow have pledged to plant about 18 million trees to prepare for this summit. The Clyde Climate Forest (CCF) is projected to increase the tree coverage in the urban areas of the Greater Glasgow region to about 20%.
