The first win of the night came for Dallas Buyers Club actor Jared Leto in the best Best Supporting Actor, who beat close favorites Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) among others.

As host Ellen DeGeneres joked with Jennifer Lawrence on taking the award to her after her epic infamous fall while taking her Best Actress award last year, 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’o won the category surprising everyone.
