The governing Trinamool Congress (TMC) crushed the opposition candidates in West Bengal’s civic elections on Wednesday, securing 93 of the 107 municipalities. The TMC landed Kanthi municipality, which is home to Opposition Leader and Nandigram’s BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, whereas the Hamro Party, a newcomer to hill politics, defeated the TMC, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to gain Darjeeling municipality.
West Bengal Polls
According to a member of the State Election Committee (SEC), “The TMC has won 93 municipalities and is in the majority in seven more.” Left Front won one civic body, and Hamro Party secured the other one”.
Despite winning a few wards in some towns, the BJP and the Congress are struggling to win a civic body. In 27 municipalities, the TMC has slashed the opposition’s vote to zero, sweeping all of the divisions. Traditional powers Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, BJP, and TMC were defeated by Hamro Party, which is led by a former GNLF member and a prominent innkeeper in Darjeeling.

Some of the districts like, Beldanga (Murshidabad), Egra (Purba Medinipur), Champdani (Hooghly), Jhalda (Purulia), are held with no clear majority.
In these civic entities, independents have the power to establish boards. Suvendu Adhikari and his family were dealt a major blow when the TMC seized Kanthi Municipality, which had been regarded as the Adhikari family’s domain for the previous four decades.
Let victory enhance our responsibility and dedication. Let triumph impart humility. Let us together work for peace, prosperity and development of the state.

Response on TMC’s Win
Polls were set in 108 municipalities, however, the TMC reportedly won uncontested Dinhata Municipality in Coochbehar region. The BJP Party President K. Laxman has marked the election process a “mockery of democracy,” and has called for a 12-hour strike on Monday to protest the atrocities. The TMC denied the accusations as unsubstantiated and claimed that opponents are looking for reasons to rationalize their failure.
