When we hear the words – The Richest Man in India – the faces of Tata, Ambani, and Adani immediately come to mind. But the person is not any one of them. He was the Nizam of Hyderabad. Mir Osman Ali Khan was the Richest Man of India.
When we talk about the richest man in India, the faces that come to mind are actors, businesspeople, or politicians. But the Nizam of Hyderabad, “Mir Osman Ali Khan,” was India’s richest man. He ruled Hyderabad for 37 years, i.e., from 1911 to 1948.
Net worth
Khan was a rich man beyond our imagination. He was his father’s successor, Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI. He is known to be India’s richest man, with a net worth of Rs. 17.47 lakh crore or $230 Billion. This is even after adjusting for inflation. This is nearly the net worth of Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and SpaceX, $250 Billion.
Luxurious life
It is said that “Mir Osman Ali Khan” led quite a luxurious life. He was on the cover of TIME magazine on February 22, 1937, as the wealthiest man globally. He used Jacob Diamond -a 185-carat diamond – as a paperweight.
The Nizam was known for giving lavish gifts, like the gifted diamond jewels -a tiara and necklace- to the British Princess Elizabeth at her wedding. Queen Elizabeth II still wears the jewelry, and the necklace is known as the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace.
Philanthropy
The Nizam developed his state, bringing necessities to his people like electricity, railways, and making roads and airways. He was also a known philanthropist who focused on education and donated to some leading universities like Jamia Nizamia, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, and Darul Uloom Deoband.
