History
The name of the cake originated from the German dessert Schwarzwald Kirschtorte, which means Black Forest cherry torte. Historians believe that the black forest cake originated from Black Forest Region(Der Schwarzwald) in Germany in the 16th century. The name Schwarzwald recalls the darkness and mystery from the romantic German concept of forest loneliness. The region is known for its sour cherries and Kirsch. In this era, chocolate was first transformed into some cakes and cookies. On combining these cherries with German chocolate, one gets a wonderful chocolate confection with cream and cherries.
Another idea of the name is a woman in traditional costume from Black forest. The dress was black and the blouse is white and the hat has red pom-poms that looked like cherries.
