What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which a person can experience periods of depression and abnormal-elevated happiness. These mood swings can last for some days or even weeks each. During this time, the person can feel extremely happy or irritated. In between these periods, they usually feel normal.
History of “World Bipolar Day”
International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) partnered, the International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) and the Asian Network of Bipolar Disorders(ANBD) partnered, and hence they began the initiative of “World Bipolar Day.” In 1999, the International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) was founded. Since the foundation has been researching bipolar disorders, they are trying to help those who are suffering from this disorder.
The earliest indication of this disorder dates back to ancient Greece. However, the modern understanding of the disorder began in the 19th century. In 1854, French neurologist Jules Baillarger and French psychiatrist Jean-Pierre Falret described this disorder. Baillargeon referred to it as ‘folie à double forme,’ and Falret called it ‘folie circular.
