After the Sri Lankan president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled to the Maldives just hours before he was due to resign in the pressure of the high-scale popular protests which occurred on Jul 9 with crowds of demonstrators storming the presidential palace, the chaos in Sri Lanka has come to its worst.
The day after he fled Sri Lanka, he flew from Maldives to Singapore where he was allowed entry on a private visit. Thereafter the president sent a resignation letter Via Email.
“The Speaker wishes to inform you that an official statement on this would be made tomorrow (Friday) after the verification process and legal formalities.”, said the parliament speaker, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Reason for the Resignation:
Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned under pressure from the Sri Lankan people who were blaming the country’s deep economic crisis on mismanagement and corruption on Sri Lanka’s political parties.
I unite myself to the sorrow of the people of Sri Lanka who continue to suffer the effects of political and economic instability. Together with the country's Bishops, I renew my appeal for peace and I implore those who have authority not to ignore the cry of the poor.

In the past three months, the country has sunk deep into debt. The Inflation is running at more than 50 percent and is expected to rise in continuation. There are shortages of food and fuel and the country defaulted on its foreign debt in May.
China being one of Sri Lanka’s biggest creditors has baulked at any concessions, because it fears that cutting Sri Lanka’s debt would prompt other debtor nations to do the same and put the Belt and Road program into the state of jeopardy.
The protestors, celebrated the resignation by vacating the government buildings they had occupied as a part of their protest.
