The weather was overcast, but the spirits were high and bright for World Dog Day 2022 at West Hollywood Park yesterday. The City of West Hollywood co-sponsored The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s 6th annual event on Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with reality star, restauranteur and animal rights activist Lisa Vanderpump. Singer Lance Bass was on hand to co-host the event.
World Dog Day 2022 brought together hundreds of people and their furry friends to celebrate dogs with a day full of entertainment during the City of West Hollywood’s first ever Pet Week. Admission was free and open to the public.
Started in 2016, this family-friendly event included live performances and DJs; an adoption area with adoptable rescue dogs; an animal education area; a doggy fashion show featuring past adopted rescue dogs and celebrity judges; a doggy pie eating contest; a raffle with incredible prizes; dozens of exhibitors featuring pet-friendly products and services; plus an array of food trucks for all to enjoy – even celebrity guests. There were also plenty of photo ops and an excuse to dress your k-9 friend in some wild outfits for furry pawed influencers.
West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister, and council members Lindsey Horvath, John D’Amico, and John Erickson were at the event to welcome everyone to World Dog Day 2022. Mayor Meister introduced Lisa Vanderpump to the stage thanking her and her entire crew for their animal rights activism.
Lisa Vanderpump opened her statement by acknowledging the massacre in Texas. She sent her thoughts, hearts and prayers to the victims of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde. “I realize at moments like this the importance of our furry friends. We turn to them for comfort, so that’s what today is all about. I recently broke my leg in four places and my dogs never left my side. They were with me every day if I hobbled to the bathroom. The husband? not so much.”
Lisa spoke of Vanderpump Dogs Foundation’s rescue efforts to find homes for dogs. She said the foundation still has a sanctuary for dogs in China and that they have rescued many dogs from their meat festival, which inspired the existence of the foundation.
World Dog Day 2022 was a day for celebrating dogs while raising awareness about global dog abuse, including the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation has rescued and adopted more than 2,300 dogs to their forever homes domestically, and hundreds more internationally.
