Johnny Depp fires back, counters $2 million damages awarded to ex-wife Amber Heard

The drama doesn’t seem to be ending soon. Johnny Depp has now appealed the $2 million defamation award the Virginia jury handed his ex-wife Amber Heard at their trial in June. This news comes a day after Amber gave formal notice to appeal the verdict in Johnny’s defamation trial against her. Johnny Depp had sued Amber Heard for defaming him in a 2018 Washington Post article, where she called herself a survivor of domestic abuse.

JOHNNY DEPP COUNTERS DAMAGES AWARDED TO AMBER HEARD

According to Deadline, in the paperwork filed in Fairfax County, Johnny Depp has appealed the $2 million defamation award. During the verdict, the jury in Virginia awarded this money to Amber Heard at their trial last month. “Plaintiff and Counterclaim-Defendant John C. Depp, II, by counsel, hereby appeals to the Court of Appeals of Virginia from all adverse rulings and from the final judgment order of this Circuit Court entered on June 24, 2022,” said the four-page notice of appeal.

Johnny’s appeal comes as a response to Amber’s appeal of July 21 as it is an effort to try to claw back the $2 million award that the Virginia jury gave Amber in her $100 million countersuit against Johnny and his 2019 $50 million complaint, Deadline reports.

In the Johnny Depp defamation trial, Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in damages. Depp has now countered that in a new appeal.

The news became public when a picture emerged of the actress wearing an ornate engagement ring. They finally got married in 2015 in a private ceremony on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas.

In 2016, Heard filed for divorce and alleged that Depp had physically abused her during their marriage under drugs or alcohol. Depp denied the accusations and stated that Heard was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.” Their divorce was finalized in 2017. Johnny Depp later sued Amber Heard for defamation because of an op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post in 2018. In the op-ed, headlined “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change,” Heard claimed that she was a domestic abuse survivor. However, she did not name Depp.
