Will the White House be sending out gas stimulus payments?
With Inflation reaching a 40-year high and the price of gas soaring, the White House could intervene by providing Americans with a gas rebate.
The last stimulus check sent out by the government came in March 2021 and with the United States still recovering from the pandemic and now faced with a gas shortage following the sanctions imposed on Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, many are hopeful for a fourth stimulus package to help them ease the burden of the increased cost of living currently sweeping the nation.
Unlike the other payments, which were sent out by the IRS, the latest stimulus package, if approved, could come directly from the White House.
If the proposal is approved, eligible Americans would be entitled to receive Gas rebate cards.
While the idea of sending out more money was initially rejected by members of the Democratic Party, especially with the IRS running low on funds after the previous three payments, the idea seems to have regained momentum in recent months.
With gas prices going above 5 dollars per gallon across much of the nation, the Biden Administration is considering its options.
Three senators who have addressed the issue directly are Mike Thompson, John Larson, and Lauren Underwood who have introduced the Gas Rebate Act of 2022.
The act aims to address the high gas prices by sending Americans an energy rebate of 100 dollars per month (and 100 dollars for each dependent) for the remainder of 2022, for any month where the national average gas price exceeds 4.00 dollars per gallon.
“Americans are feeling the impact at the pump of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and right now we must work together on common-sense policy solutions to ease the financial burden that my constituents are feeling,” said Thompson in a press statement.
“The Putin Price Hike is putting strain on our economy, and I am proud to be working with Reps. Larson and Underwood to introduce this legislation to provide middle-class Americans with monthly payments to ease the financial burden of this global crises.”
Individuals earning less than 75,000 dollars and phased out to 80,000 dollars will be eligible for a rebate of $100, while joint filers earning less than 150,000 dollars and phased out at 160,000 dollars will also be eligible for the 100 dollar payment.
