Scotland’s largest city is ready to take centre stage as host of the 20th Commonwealth Games (CWG) ceremony. The games will be formally open by Queen Elizabeth II in front of 40,000 crowd at Celtic Park.
TV audience of up to a billion people is expected to watch the event globally from 23 July 21:00 BST (24 July 1.30 AM IST ). CWG is third largest sporting event after Olympics and Asian Games. Around 4,500 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories will be parading during the curtain raiser with 2,000 members performing in the ceremony.
The multi-sport event will have athletes competing in 17 sports through 11 days of competition begining on Thursday. The closing ceremony will take place on 3 August at Hampden Stadium. Previous host Team India will lead the parade which will end with Team Scotland, the current host.
Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar is also part of the ceremony as the Global ambassador of UNICEF. For each region the live crowd will be shown films of Unicef work. Organisers have not revealed Sachin’s role in the ceremony. The special films recorded by the likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sachin Tendulkar are aimed to raise funds for projects by UNICEF.
A hand-written message inserted by Queen in a baton last year has journeyed more than 190,000 km through Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, North and South America will be lighting the opening ceremony. Nearly a million tickets have been sold for the event. The live event will be available for watching on TEN sports and DD News also.
