Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2014, said that he has invited a total of nine people for joining the mass drive for cleanliness and urged each one to ask and draw nine people in the initiative in an attempt to make it viral.
Modi also asked people to upload their images and videos online.
His audience at the famed India Gate in Delhi was all praises as he started to name each of the nine celebrities.
Among the names for cleanliness challenge was cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, and Goa governor Mridula Sinha.
He also stunned many as he named former union minister Shashi Tharoor. His list also included Bollywood names like Salman Khan, Kamal Haasan, and Priyanka Chopra.
Others he named were the team of TV serial Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma and industrialist Anil Ambani.
Sachin Tendulkar was quick to respond on twitter and wrote, “I humbly accept the challenge.”
Priyanka Chopra posted, “I humbly accept respected Prime Minster Narendra Modiji’s challenge. This is an idea that is long overdue #CleanIndiaCampaign @PMOIndia”.
Modi also said that people do need to change their mindset and join hands for the efforts of cleaning the country. “This is not about Modi… Modi is only one of its 1.2 billion people… this is a people’s task,” he said at the event, reported NDTV.
He also said that ‘Clean India’ campaign is driven by patriotism and has nothing to do with politics. He also said that he has five years for the campaign, and if India can reach the red planet, Indians can also clean the country.
