Minnesota frontline workers are set to receive a stimulus payment of about $487 for fighting COVID-19.
The direct payment was announced by Governor Tim Walz on October 3, with as many as 1,025,655 workers in line to receive a check. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan later confirmed the news on Twitter.
Our frontline workers are heroes who risked their health and safety to save lives and keep us moving during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, I’m proud to say these workers will receive $487.45 in recognition from the State of Minnesota.— Governor Tim Walz (@GovTimWalz) October 3, 2022
“Today, @GovTimWalz and I announced that Minnesota frontline workers will receive $487.45 in bonus pay,” she wrote.
“Our frontline heroes have put their lives on the line daily during the COVID-19 pandemic to care for our communities. This is just one small way we can say thank you.”
How to qualify
Payments began being sent out on October 5, with eligible recipients receiving word by email about their application being approved.
Healthcare, long-term care, education, courts, and food service workers were eligible.
Minnesota residents who worked in those positions during the most recent tax year will qualify for the $487 payment.
Those receiving the payment by direct deposit will receive it within 7 to 10 business days, meaning they will receive the money the week of October 17.
Those who opted for a pre-paid debit card will have to wait three to four weeks.
The original plan was for 667,000 frontline workers to receive payments of 750 dollars thanks to a $500 million pledge.
However, the payment was later expanded to include more workers, resulting in smaller amounts.
