American actress and director Greta Gerwig shared her overall experience when she was hired as co-writer and director for the upcoming Barbie movie.
She recently appeared in a podcast where she said, “It was terrifying. I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible,'” “It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
She said that taking this film would bring a lot of challenges for her and continued,
“Usually, that’s where the best stuff is. When you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that,'” “Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.'”
Gerwig also told the host Dua Lipa that the toymaker of the Barbie Mattel is a fantastic partner. The company also helps her feel comfortable and free to direct the ambitious project, which is very rare nowadays. She said,
“Whatever we wanted [the film] to be, they did not try to micromanage it.” “They were completely onboard as partners, and that was extraordinary.”
Barbie is an upcoming live-action romantic comedy film that Noah Baumbach and Gerwig write. It is based on the eponymous fashion doll line by Mattel. In 2009, Universal Pictures, with Laurence Mark, announced the film. But the development for the film began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures bought the rights.
Later, for some reason, it was transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures from Sony. In 2019, Margot Robbie was hired for the lead role in the film, where she also serves as the producer. In 2021, Gerwig was confirmed as director and co-writer.
The movie features Robbie, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, and others in the lead roles. It is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023.
