Thanks to last month’s election results, in which Democrats took both the House and Senate, Minnesotans may soon receive a new stimulus check. The possibility of Minnesota providing $1,000 stimulus cheques is highly likely now that Democrats have complete control of the state legislature.
Elections In Minnesota
Last month’s 2022 midterm elections saw victories for the Democratic Farm Labor Party (DFL) in Minnesota, which gained a majority in the Senate and kept control of the Minnesota House. In addition, Gov. Tim Walz was successful in getting reelected. The last time one party dominated each of the three chambers of the Minnesota state legislature was in 2013. As a result, many think Minnesota may issue $1,000 stimulus cheques as a result of the most recent election.
Approval Of Stimulus Payment
Democrats may proceed with the stimulus payments for two reasons. First off, Minnesota continues to have a $9 billion surplus. The state budget agency predicted a $9 billion surplus in March due to increased tax collection. Second, Gov. Tim Walz reminded voters throughout his campaign speeches that he intended to use the extra funds to mail stimulus cheques totaling up to $1,000 for people and up to $2,000 for couples.
Last year, when the 2022 Legislature departed without agreeing on how to handle the budget surplus, Gov. Walz first suggested issuing stimulus payments. The idea to transfer the stimulus payments from Minnesota may not pass, even though the DFL commands the Legislature and also the governor desires to deliver them. This is because certain DFL members are against writing stimulus checks.
When speaking on WCCO Sunday morning last month, House Speaker Melissa Hortman made a similar suggestion. Therefore, there is still a wait for the $1,000 Minnesota stimulus cheques. We do, however, know that the likelihood of a stimulus payments package being approved is far higher now than it was the last time ValueWalk.
