An abseiling instructor fell to his grave while supervising a group of students on a trip near Margaret River on March 16, 2023. His death marked a tragedy for the famous tourist spot.
What we know so far
Authorities are looking into the death of an instructor who passed away while abseiling with a group of schoolchildren at a well-known tourist destination in West Australia.
When the event unfolded, the 53-year-old man was leading a field trip at Brides Cave in Boranup, close to Margaret River. He was with a group of students and instructors from an urban high school, per PerthNow report.
How did the authorities get involved?
“A number of students and teachers had already abseiled down to the bottom of the cave area when the instructor fell,” police said in a statement.
“First aid was provided to the man until an RAC Rescue helicopter paramedic was lowered down into the cave and took over care of the patient.
“DFES State Emergency Service volunteers and colleagues of the deceased man were able to provide guidance and instruction to safely recover the deceased, students and teachers from the bottom of the cave.”
Police were first summoned to the well-known abseiling location at around 3.20 p.m. to help St. John, WA, and SES volunteers with the medical evacuation of the man who fell while leading an abseiling expedition with a group of students and instructors from a Perth high school.
A statement from the police revealed that when the instructor fell, many students and teachers had already abseiled down to the bottom of the cave region. The man received first aid until a paramedic from a RAC Rescue helicopter was flown down into the cave and took over the patient’s treatment. The man could not be saved and passed away on the spot.
The deceased’s coworkers from the DFES State Emergency Service were able to offer directions so that the man, students, and teachers could be safely recovered from the cave’s bottom.
The event has also been notified to WorkSafe, and a report will be drafted for the coroner.
