Bangladesh and Ireland will face each other in the second match of the three-game ODI series at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday (March 20).
The hosts have a 1-0 lead after registering a massive 183-run win in the first ODI, their biggest margin of victory in ODIs. Can Ireland put up a better fight in the second game and keep the series alive?

Bangladesh’s dominant performance
In the first ODI, Bangladesh put on a clinical display with bat and ball. After being asked to bat first by Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie, they posted a daunting total of 338 for 8 in 50 overs. The star of the show was all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who smashed 93 off 89 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
He was well supported by debutant Towhid Hridoy, who scored 92 off 85 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Hridoy became the highest scorer for Bangladesh on their ODI debut, surpassing Tamim Iqbal’s 51 against Zimbabwe in 2007.
The other notable contributions came from opener Tamim (42), wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (36), and lower-order hitter Mehidy Hasan Miraz (28* off 11). Bangladesh’s total was their third-highest in ODIs and their highest against Ireland.

In reply, Ireland never looked comfortable against Bangladesh’s pace and spin attack. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for just 155 in 38 overs.
Only three batsmen reached double figures for them – Paul Stirling (32), Harry Tector (30), and Lorcan Tucker (25). The rest of the batting line-up failed to cope with the pressure of chasing a big target.
The pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh was Ebadot Hossain, who claimed four wickets for 42 runs in eight overs. He was ably assisted by left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, who took three wickets for 43 runs in nine overs. Shakib also chipped in with two wickets for 24 runs in seven overs to complete an all-around performance.
The win gave Bangladesh five points on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League table, while Ireland remained in ninth place with five points from eight matches.

What to expect from the second ODI
The second ODI will be another opportunity for both teams to gain some valuable points on the Super League table, which determines qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Bangladesh will aim to seal another home series win with a victory on Monday, while Ireland hopes to bounce back from their humiliating defeat and level the series.
Bangladesh are unlikely to change its winning combination unless there are any injury concerns or fitness issues. They have a balanced squad with experienced players like Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiqur, and Mustafizur Rahman, as well as young talents like Hridoy, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, and Taskin Ahmed.
Ireland may consider making some changes to their playing XI after their poor performance in the first ODI. They may bring back experienced batsman William Porterfield or all-rounder Simi Singh into the side to strengthen their batting order.
They may also look at options like Barry McCarthy or Craig Young to add pace and variety to their bowling attack.
The pitch at Sylhet is expected to be good for batting, with some assistance for spinners. The weather forecast is clear, with no rain expected during match time.
