Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s daughter Suri is growing up fast and preparing for her next big step: college. But according to sources close to the family, the Mission Impossible star has not been involved in his daughter’s life for years and has no plans to reconnect with her.
“Suri hasn’t seen Tom in over eight years,” a source told Us Weekly. “He doesn’t even send her birthday or Christmas presents. He’s completely cut her out of his life.”
The source added that Cruise’s devotion to Scientology is the main reason for his estrangement from Suri, who is 16 years old and attends a private school in New York City. “Tom is very strict about following the rules of Scientology,” the source said. “He believes that Suri is a ‘suppressive person’ because she’s not a Scientologist, and he can’t associate with her.”
Holmes, who divorced Cruise in 2012 after six years of marriage, has sole custody of Suri and has been raising her as a single mom. The Dawson’s Creek alum has supported Suri’s academic and personal goals, including her college aspirations.
“Suri is a smart and talented girl who wants to study art and design,” another source told Us Weekly. “She’s looking at New York, California, and Europe schools. Katie is very proud of her and wants her to have the best education possible.”
The source also said that Holmes has moved on from Cruise and is happy with her new boyfriend, chef Emilio Vitolo Jr., whom she started dating last year. “Katie and Emilio are very much in love,” the source said. “They have a lot in common and enjoy each other’s company. Emilio gets along great with Suri too. He treats her like his own daughter.”
