On March 27, 2023, Mithun Vijay Kumar, a writer and political critic, submitted a legal notice to Netflix demanding the streaming service to take down one of the episodes of its well-known program,” The Big Bang Theory “.
The Controversy
In the American television series “The Big Bang Theory”, Rajesh Koothrappali, an astrophysicist of Indian descent played by Kunal Nayyar, is one of four scientists whose lives are centered on California. The legal warning references an interaction between Rajesh and another character, Sheldon Cooper, in the first episode of the show’s second season, titled “The Bad Fish Paradigm.”
In the scene, Sheldon asks Rajesh if the woman in the title song of “Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai,” starring Ameesha Patel, is Aishwarya Rai, to which Rajesh answers in the affirmative and labels her a great actress. Then Sheldon refers to her as “a poor man’s Madhuri Dixit,” to which Rajesh objects. In his opinion, Aishwarya Rai is a divine being, while Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute.
As per The News Minute, a long-time Dixit fan, mister Vijay Kumar, believes Rajesh’s comment in the show is not only offensive to the actress but also supports and promotes prejudice and sexism. Hence he demanded that Netflix should remove that episode from its platform.
Failing to take action will force mister Kumar to take legal help.
The show
“The Big Bang Theory” is a famous American sitcom. The show’s original cast consisted of five people who lived in Pasadena, California: physicists Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, who share a flat; Penny, a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall; Howard Wolowitz, an aerospace engineer, and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali.
Whatever the outcome of the legal notice, the uproar surrounding “The Big Bang Theory” episode has emphasized the need for more sensitivity and understanding in the media and entertainment industries.
As customers, we must hold media platforms accountable for their behavior and demand that they respect the cultural values and sensibilities of the communities they serve.
