On Monday, March 27, Scottish nationalists chose Humza Yousaf to be the nation’s new leader after a heated competition.
About Humza Yousaf
On April 7, 1985, Humza Haroon Yousaf was born in Glasgow. His father, Muzaffar Yousaf, son of a first-generation immigrant born in Mian Channu, Pakistan, moved to the city in the 1960s with his family and later worked as an accountant.
Yousaf was interested in charity work at a young age, from youth groups to fundraisers. When Yousaf was a student at Glasgow University in 2005, he joined the Scottish National Party (SNP).
As per the Mint,on Monday, Humza Yousaf was chosen to lead the Scottish National Party. In his acceptance speech, Yousaf pledged to unite the party, assist people facing the cost of the living problem, and secure independence from the United Kingdom.
Yousaf’s victory
Yousaf, who has been in government since 2012 and is presently Scotland’s health secretary, was viewed as the front-runner in the contest against Ash Regan and Kate Forbes.
His supporters have praised him as best-positioned to uphold the SNP’s cooperation with the Scottish Greens party and have positioned him as a candidate for unity.
After a six-week campaign in which the three candidates spent most of the time attacking one another personally and criticizing one another’s record, Yousaf’s win was officially announced at the nation’s rugby stadium.
Yousaf assumes control of a party whose primary goal is to dissolve Scotland’s three-century union with England.
The British government consistently obstructed a path to a second referendum on independence, which led to his predecessor’s resignation.
