If you are a fan of the Joker and his twisted love story with Harley Quinn, you might be excited to know that the sequel to the 2019 film Joker is currently in production and filming at a shuttered hospital in New Jersey.

The film, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, is set to be released in 2024 and will feature Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the lead roles.

Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical psychological thriller that follows the events of the first film, where Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) became the Joker, a nihilistic criminal with a clown motif.

In this sequel, he meets Harley Quinn (Gaga), a psychiatrist who falls in love with him and joins him in his madness.

The film is based on the characters from DC Comics and is directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver.

Where is it filming?

The film has been filming in various locations since December 2022, including New York City and New Jersey.

One of the most prominent locations is the former Essex County Hospital Center in Belleville, which has been transformed into Arkham Asylum.

At this notorious psychiatric facility, many of Batman’s enemies are incarcerated. The hospital closed in 2007 and has been abandoned ever since, making it a perfect setting for the dark and gritty tone of the film.

Besides Phoenix and Gaga, who have both received critical acclaim for their previous roles, the film also features Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, a single mother whom Arthur fantasized about as his love interest in the first film.

Additionally, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released theatrically on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after the release of Joker.
