Former South African Athlete Oscar Pistorius Denied Parole From Jail

Oscar Pistorius, a paralympic gold medalist from South Africa, was denied parole on Friday, after requesting an early release from jail ten years after he killed his girlfriend in a shooting.

In an act that horrified the entire world, Pistorius shot his then-girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp four times through the toilet door of his ultra-secure Pretoria home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013.

Ultimately, Pistorius received a 13-year sentence after being found guilty of the murder. He has already completed half of his 13-year sentence.

Parole Request

As per NDTV reports, on Friday morning, a parole hearing began at the jail(Pretoria Prison) outside of the capital where the 36-year-old is being held.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, a parole board determined that Pistorius had not served the minimum amount of time in custody necessary for release.

The decision was well-received by Steenkamp’s parents, who had opposed an early release since they didn’t think the former athlete had spoken the truth about what had transpired and had shown no repentance.

Pistorius has consistently said that he accidentally shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp while suspecting she was a thief. He was convicted of culpable homicide before being convicted of murder.
