The first night of WWE WrestleMania 39 delivered some thrilling moments and shocking outcomes.
One of the most anticipated matches of the night was the tag team unification match between the SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos and the Raw Tag Team Champions Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.
The Usos’ dominant run comes to an end
The Usos had been the most dominant tag team in WWE history, holding the SmackDown Tag Team Titles for a record-breaking 512 days.
They had defeated every possible challenger on their brand, including The New Day, The Street Profits, and The Mysterios.
They had also aligned themselves with their cousin Roman Reigns, the Universal Champion, and formed a powerful faction known as The Bloodline.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens overcome their differences
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens had a long and bitter rivalry that spanned across multiple brands and promotions. They had fought each other in brutal matches, such as a Last Man Standing match at Royal Rumble 2021 and a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam 2021.
However, they had also shown glimpses of friendship and respect, such as when they teamed up to defeat Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 34.
After being drafted to Raw in October 2022, Zayn and Owens decided to put their differences aside and focus on their common goal: becoming tag team champions.
They quickly rose up the ranks of the Raw tag team division, defeating teams like RK-Bro, AJ Styles and Omos, and The Viking Raiders.
They earned a shot at the Raw Tag Team Titles at Survivor Series 2022, where they defeated The Hurt Business (Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin) to become the new champions.
The unification match at WrestleMania 39
After both teams retained their titles at Royal Rumble 2023, WWE announced that they would face each other in a unification match at WrestleMania 39. The match would determine the undisputed tag team champions of WWE, who would appear on both Raw and SmackDown.
The match was a classic display of tag team wrestling, with both teams showing great chemistry and teamwork.
The Usos used their speed and agility to counter Zayn and Owens’ power and brawling. Zayn and Owens used their resilience and creativity to counter The Usos’ aerial attacks and superkicks.
The match had several near falls and dramatic moments, such as when Zayn saved Owens from a double splash by pulling him out of the ring at the last second.
The end came when Zayn hit Jimmy Uso with a Helluva Kick, followed by Owens hitting Jey Uso with a Stunner. Zayn then pinned Jey Uso for the three count, ending The Usos’ historic reign and crowning Zayn and Owens as the undisputed tag team champions of WWE.
The aftermath
Zayn and Owens celebrated their monumental victory with hugs and tears, as they held up both sets of titles. The crowd gave them a standing ovation for their performance and their journey. The Usos showed respect to their opponents by shaking their hands and raising their arms.
However, the celebration was cut short by Roman Reigns, who came out to confront his cousins for losing their titles. Reigns berated them for bringing shame to their family and said that they were no longer part of The Bloodline. He then attacked them with a steel chair, leaving them lying in the ring. Zayn and Owens tried to intervene, but Reigns fought them off with chair shots and spears.
Reigns then stood tall in the ring with his Universal Title, as he declared that he was still the head of the table and the tribal chief of WWE.
