It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of our time’s most influential and innovative composers. Sakamoto died on April 2, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.
Sakamoto pioneered electronic music, blending genres and cultures with his eclectic and experimental style. He was also a renowned film composer, winning an Oscar for his score for The Last Emperor in 1987. He collaborated with many artists, such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Madonna, and Björk.
Sakamoto was also a vocal activist for environmental and social causes, using his music and platform to raise awareness and support for various issues. He was a founding member of the Stop Rokkasho project, which opposed the construction of a nuclear reprocessing plant in Japan. He also participated in the Artists’ Project Earth, which aimed to raise funds for climate change mitigation and disaster relief.
Sakamoto leaves behind a legacy of musical innovation and inspiration that will continue to resonate with generations of listeners. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fans, and colleagues. Rest in peace, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
