Dwayne Johnson Confirms the Live-Action version of Disney animated 'Moana.'

On Monday, April 3, in a sweet skit with his daughters, the ‘Black Adam‘ star announced the Live-action version of the Disney animation “Moana” is in development.

As part of Disney’s annual shareholder meeting, which was presided over by CEO Bob Iger, the news was made via a recorded message from Hawaii.

As per DEADLINE, Johnson, who provided the voice of the deity Maui in the first movie, will produce the live-action version alongside Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn through their Seven Bucks Productions and Flynn Picture Co.

Auli’i Cravalho, the original Moana voice actor, and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. will serve as executive producers. In addition, Samoan industry veteran Dana Ledoux Miller and the original film’s screenwriter Jared Bush—also well-known for his work on the Disney films Encanto and Zootopia—will participate in the project.

Johnson will come back as Maui from the 2016 animated film set in Polynesia. But whether the rest of the original actors will return to their roles is still unknown.

About Moana

In the Disney-produced animation of Moana, the story follows a teenager from a Pacific Island of the same name venturing into the ocean with Maui to rectify the wrongs after Maui unintentionally released an old curse.

When released in November 2016, it had amassed almost $644 million in worldwide earnings and received two Oscar nominations.

Like its animated predecessor, the live-action version will honor the cultures, islands, and traditions of Pacific Islanders, as seen through the perspective of a young girl ready to forge her path.
