Mahavir Jayanti, also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is the most important festival for the followers of Jainism, celebrated every year on March 4, 2023. It marks the birth anniversary of Mahavir, the 24th and last Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of Jainism.
Mahavir was born in the 6th century BCE in present-day Bihar, India. He renounced worldly pleasures and became an ascetic at the age of 30.
He attained enlightenment after 12 years of rigorous meditation and preached the principles of non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, purity, and non-attachment for the rest of his life.
