Famous Indian Celebrities Lost Their Blue Tick On Twitter, Failing To Pay For The Premium Plans

On Thursday, April 20, the social media platform Twitter removed the traditional verified blue ticks from all accounts that did not pay for it.

Musk’s New Rules

Twitter had previously declared that it would remove the verified check-mark status from accounts that were confirmed as authentic before Elon Musk’s takeover unless they had purchased Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organizations plan.

The blue tick was first used to safeguard famous people from imitation and combat misleading information.

Twitter initially adopted the blue tick mark system in 2009 to make it easier for users to tell which accounts were legitimate and which were impersonators or copies of famous people, politicians, businesses and brands, news institutions, and other accounts ‘of public interest.’ Previously, the organization didn’t charge for verification.

As per the Economic Times, within two weeks of the firm’s acquisition last year, Musk introduced Twitter Blue, which included the check-mark emblem as one of the exclusive benefits.

Celebrities Lose Their Blue Ticks

Twitter has taken away the traditional blue verified badges from accounts that do not have a Twitter Blue membership. Twitter users who were verified under the previous system lost the coveted blue tick as they did not pay by April 20, as company leader Elon Musk warned earlier this month.

Only individual Twitter users who pay for Twitter Blue, which costs $8 per month through the web and $11 per month via in-app purchase on iOS and Android, have verified blue check marks.

Several B-town celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, and politicians Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among others, have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts as a result of the recent development.

Politicians currently don’t have the blue tick either; however, Twitter recently changed their profiles to include a grey tick to indicate the nature of the account. The grey check mark means, “This account is verified because it is a government or multilateral organization account.” The logo is now included on the profiles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Vice President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and others.
