On Thursday, April 20, when local officials reported an explosion that injured two persons and left a sizable crater in the city of Belgorod, Russia said one of its fighter planes had lost ammunition over the area.
The Blast
According to local reports, a Russian warplane mistakenly discharged a weapon into Belgorod near Ukraine on Thursday, April 20, resulting in an explosion and destroying many buildings.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the regional governor of Belgorod, reported that the explosion that followed left a 20-meter-wide crater on one of the city’s main streets. Furthermore, the governor has declared a state of emergency.
As per Firstpost reports, ever since Russian President Vladimir Putin dispatched soldiers to Ukraine in February 2022, Belgorod has been constantly bombarded.
Gladkov informed Putin in January that 25 people had died and more than 90 had been wounded in the area since the attack began.
The Aftermath
Gladkov and Valentin Demidov, the mayor of Belgorod, shared images of the damage on social media.
One image showed a group of downcast people huddling outside an apartment block, with a fire engine close by and one woman carrying a tiny puppy.
Other pictures revealed the blast-damaged interiors of apartments.
Local officials did not disclose what caused the explosion, but the Russian defense ministry said in a statement that a fighter plane had lost ammunition above Belgorod.
The event occurred around 22:15 local time, according to the statement issued by local news outlets.
Gladkov cited preliminary data in stating that one woman was hospitalized with a head injury, and another woman was treated on the site.
