No Eid Celebration In Poonch Village As A Mark Of Respect For Army Truck Victims

Village In Poonch Forgoes Eid Celebrations Following Attacks On Army Truck

In contrast to the rest of the nation, one village in Poonch, Jammu, and Kashmir, has chosen to skip Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday this year.

Sangiote’s Decision

As per the reports of Hindustan Times, Sangiote village residents of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district have decided not to celebrate Eid on Saturday following the terror attack on the army truck carrying supplies for the event.

The Army truck, tragically attacked on Thursday and killed five soldiers, was headed for that neighborhood. The vehicle was transporting fruits and other supplies for an iftar gathering scheduled to take place in Sagiote later that day.

The Incident

The truck was transporting supplies from the RR’s Basooni headquarters in Balakote. It also picked up extra supplies along the route from the Bhimber Gali region, where the RR is heavily present due to the transit of Army convoys between Poonch and Rajouri.

Around 3 pm, unidentified terrorists who had previously set up an ambush assaulted the heavy van from various sides as it passed Tota Gali and was just 7-8 kilometers from its intended destination.

Soon after the attack, when Army forces and residents of the surrounding village of Bhatta Durian arrived at the scene, they discovered five soldiers’ burned dead, a sixth who was in serious condition, and a few scattered ruined fruits and other food items.

Mukhtiaz Khan, the sarpanch of the Sangiote panchayat, said, “What iftar fast when five of our soldiers were martyred in that unfortunate incident.”

Investigation So Far

While a MI helicopter, drones, and sniffer dogs were used in a massive search for the attackers of Thursday’s attack, at least 12 people were detained on Friday for questioning concerning the deadly ambush of five army soldiers in the dense forest area of Bata Doriya here.

According to officials, the security forces are questioning people who have been detained at different levels to determine the identity of the terror organization, which is said to have been operating in the region for more than a year and likely includes a sniper.
