Disney’s Hotstar has lost 8.4 million subscribers in the last six months, as Ambani’s JioCinema has ascended. This is the second consecutive quarter that Hotstar has lost subscribers, and the decline is being attributed to a number of factors, including the loss of Indian Premier League (IPL) digital rights, the non-renewal of the content deal with Reliance Jio, and increased competition from other streaming platforms.
Hotstar was the most popular streaming service in India in 2022, with over 50 million subscribers. However, the platform lost the digital rights to the IPL, India’s most popular cricket tournament, to rival Reliance Viacom18 in 2023. The loss of the IPL rights is a major blow to Hotstar, as the tournament is a major driver of subscriptions.
In addition to losing the IPL rights, Hotstar also lost its content deal with Reliance Jio. Jio is India’s largest telecom operator, and its subscribers had access to Hotstar content for free. The loss of this deal means that Jio subscribers now have to pay for Hotstar content, which could lead to a decline in subscriptions.
Finally, Hotstar is facing increased competition from other streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and SonyLIV. These platforms are all investing heavily in original content, which is making it more difficult for Hotstar to compete.
As a result of these factors, Hotstar has lost 8.4 million subscribers in the last six months. The platform is still the most popular streaming service in India, but it is facing increasing challenges from its rivals.
