Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to preside over the 8th meeting of the Niti Aayog’s governing council on Saturday, May 27. A number of opposition figures, including Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, have decided not to attend the meeting.
Leaders Not Attending
There are up to eight chief ministers who made the decision not to attend the Niti Aayog meeting, including Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, Bhagwant Mann of Punjab, Nitish Kumar of Bihar, K Chandrashekar Rao of Telangana, MK Stalin of Tamil Nadu, Ashok Gehlot Rajathan, and Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal stated that he was “boycotting” the meeting in protest of the “undemocratic and unconstitutional” May 19 ordinance that restored control over services in the national capital to the Centre under the LG, effectively nullifying a Supreme Court order that handed over control of services, except for police, public order, and land, to the elected government.
The Punjab chief minister will not attend the Niti Aayog conference to protest the Centre’s alleged prejudice against the state in its allocation of funding.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu won’t be able to attend the conference because he is visiting Singapore and Japan.
The Meeting
The event will be held at Pragati Maidan’s brand-new Convention Centre in New Delhi. The top priorities on PM Modi’s agenda will be infrastructure improvement, women’s empowerment, skill development, and other critical sectors.
“Eight prominent themes will be discussed during the day-long Meeting, including (i) Viksit Bharat@2047, (ii) Thrust on MSMEs, (iii) Infrastructure and Investments, (iv) Minimising Compliances, (v) Women Empowerment, (vi) Health and Nutrition, (vii) Skill Development, and (viii) Gati Shakti for area development and social infrastructure,” the NITI Aayog reported.
As per The IndianExpress, the government’s think tank’s primary decision-making body is the Governing Council of NITI Aayog. The Chief Ministers of States, Union Territories with legislatures, Lieutenant Governors of other UTs, and other influential Union Ministers make up the council, which is presided over by the Prime Minister. The council’s 8th meeting is crucial since it will cover the topic of turning the nation into a developed powerhouse by 2047.
