Chris Licht, the CEO of CNN, quit after over a year on the job as he could not save the long-struggling news organization. His resignation was confirmed on Wednesday, June 7.
Litch’s Controversial Run
After meeting with Mr. Licht, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav notified the workforce on Wednesday morning that Mr. Licht would be immediately departing the company.
During Mr. Licht’s 13-month tenure at CNN, there were several controversies. Before he took office, he had a difficult start when he had to shut down the pricey CNN+ streaming service at the behest of the network’s new owners, who were wary of a standalone digital product. Many people were let go as a result of the reduction.
Before a permanent leader was chosen, according to Mr. Zaslav, an interim team of executives, including David Leavy, the recently hired chief operating officer, and CNN veterans Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley, and Eric Sherling, would be taking over. He stated it may take several months to conclude the process.
Litch’s Contribution
Licht, a wunderkind producer who helped launch MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and revived CBS’ morning show, declared that CNN’s morning show will be “re-imagined.” Don Lemon, another left-wing personality who survived Licht’s early purges but could not get along with co-hosts Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow, hosted the AM program he finally created. The melodrama that took place both on and off-air made the program more famous than its actual content.
Additionally, Chris Cuomo’s permanent successor in the 9 p.m. primetime position was announced by Licht at the end of 2022 after the host was ousted in late 2021. Licht changed the advertisement, adding various specials and town halls that failed to connect with viewers. As per Fox News, he ultimately chose Collins to cover the important schedule, but Licht left before her new program made an impression.
