The latest in a series of rising measures taken by state authorities to handle illegal crossings, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Thursday, June 8, that the state would build a 1,000-foot floating barrier in the middle of the Rio Grande to keep migrants from entering the country.
Measures To Counter Illegal Border Crossing
A news statement from Abbott’s office stated that erecting an inflatable barrier along the border would “proactively prevent illegal crossings between ports of entry by making it more difficult to cross the Rio Grande and reach the Texas side of the southern border.”
Along with the declaration of a new border crossing barrier, Abbott also signed a package of six bills pertaining to border security that are meant to assist the state to “hold the line” as more illegal immigrants, guns, and dangerous substances enter Texas from Mexico.
The package contains bills that would allow the Texas military to use uncrewed aircraft for search and recovery missions, permit U.S. Border Patrol agents who have completed Texas DPS training to make arrests, conduct searches, and seize property at established border checkpoints, and compensate landowners for damage to their property brought on by illegal immigration.
The Budget
The Texas Legislature passed a two-year budget last month, including $5.1 billion for border security.
Steve McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, stated that the first segment of the floating barrier, constructed by Cochrane USA, would cost $1 million.
Spikes are used in other variations of the barrier, but not the ones Mr. Abbott displays in his presentation.
As per The New York Times, officials in Eagle Pass, a small city that has had difficulty coping with the enormous influx of new immigrants, praised Mr. Abbott’s initiatives.
